the characteristics of the invertebrate community and water quality within the floodplains and in
the main channel. Four monthly trips followed flood recession and the concurrent disconnection
of the floodplain from the main channel. These were to monitor invertebrate communities in any
floodplain areas that retained water and the main channel.
During 1996, sampling within the main channel of the Green River was conducted at
three locations adjacent to each of the six sites. These locations are referred to as above, mid,
and below with corresponding locations in the channel described in relation to the specific
floodplain site. For the 1997 and 1998 seasons, river sampling was reduced to three reaches with
reach one located adjacent to the Bonanza Bridge site, reach two adjacent to the above Brennan
site, and reach three adjacent to the Old Charlie Manipulated site. At each location water
chemistry, benthos, and invertebrate drift samples were collected in replicate. Temperature and
dissolved oxygen levels were also recorded (Table 2.1). Areas of connection between the main
channel and the floodplain referred to as inflow and outflow were also sampled. At these sites,
drift, water velocity, temperature, and dissolve oxygen were sampled.
