Valdez and Ryel (1995) also found strong year-class strength of
humpback chub in the Grand Canyon to be correlated with flooding events. Due
to conditions of high turbidity and high flows during spawning, wild Gila
spawning, as yet, has not been observed in riverine conditions. However,
based on available knowledge, all Gila spawn during late spring on the
descending limb of the hydrograph. Jonez and Sumner (1954) observed bonytail
spawning in Lake Mohave in May of 1954. They reported broadcast spawning of
females, escorted by three to five males, over a gravel shelf. Captive
bonytail have also spawned successfully in earthen ponds at Dexter National
Fish Hatchery, New Mexico.
Marsh (1985) noted that newly hatched bonytail had highest larval
survival at temperatures of 15 and 20°C (32%) with no survival at 5, 10 and
30°C. After hatching, larval bonytail swam into the current before adhering
to incubation chamber sides.
13
