The geomet- <br />ric symmetry of this particular transect ensures <br />that the vertical and lateral components of the <br />voltage gradient are zero (or at least minimized). <br />Therefore, the voltage gradient profiles illus- <br />trated in Figs. 18 through 23 are actually calcula- <br />tions of the magnitude of the radial component of <br />voltage gradient in the horizontal plane. <br />200 <br />Fig. 19. For information regarding the vertical <br />voltage gradient, the measurement involves re- <br />cording several profiles at different depths in the <br />same vertical plane and then noting the voltage <br />differences between the profiles. The same prose- <br />dure applies for the lateral components of voltage <br />gradient, except that the data are recorded along
