(Photos 5,6)
USGS 32245
The original photograph was taken on Sept. 10th,1922. The image is an excellent view of the channels
and the image quality is good. The matching site was moved slightly due to erosion of the original site.
The lens on the view camera matched the original fairly well but it is not quite as wide.
Location: Mile 40.5
View: Upstream (from river left)
Matching Data:
9/7/96
3:24 p.m.
Weather: Partly cloudy and warm.
Approximate Flow: @ 2,100 cfs
Film: TMAX 100
Exposure: 1/60 sec. @ f/22
Camera Height: 150 cm.
Print Data: PC DI, RC, F; Dektol 1:2; 22 sec. @ f/22
Photographer: Susie Holman
To Locate Match Site:
Mid way through the Joe Hutch Canyon Rapid pull in at the beach on river left (above Cow Swim
camp). Then climb on top of the ledge to a point overlooking the river. The original site must no longer
exist, there is evidence of erosion where it would have been. The wash is a little sketchy in terms of
scrambling up it but it is possible.
Geomorphic/Vegetation Changes
• More vegetation overall.
• Cobbles exposed river right throughout the photograph.
• The river right sand bar has increased in size and has been heavily colonized with new vegetation.
• River left channel is no longer flowing, only small amount of slackwater at end of the island.
• River right, downstream most, tamarisk and willows as well as a couple junipers have established
themselves on the bank.
• Vegetation seem more aggregated on the river right, above the willow line.
• Large cobbles and boulders just out from the wash on river right, just below island.
• Cobbles on the tip (downstream) of the big island.
• The two islands (big and small) in the original photograph, once predominantly bare sand have been
vegetated. The large island supports a ring of tall cottonwoods. Grasses occupy the center. A
vigorous thicket of tamarisk covers the downstream point.
• The sandy shore along river right is inundated at high flows. The bench above has more vegetation,
cottonwoods, willows and tamarisk.
• Now there are more junipers on river left, on the bar above the big island.
• Possible a new grove of cottonwoods on the outside loop of the mini-channel on river right across
from the mini-island.
• There is less vegetation at the mouth of the wash on river right (flash flood?)
• On river right above small island there appears to be a denser growth of cottonwoods.
