-55-
Net catches seem to indicate that the fish are utilizing this type of
habitat and, since such slopes are common in the canyon portion of the
reservoir, it appears that the lake trout are not limited by the avail-
ability of suitable spawning substrate. In addition, length frequency
data indicate that there are probably several year classes in the res-
ervoir, and the large numbers of small lake trout indicate successful
reproduction occurring over several years.
Recommendations
Additional work should be done to determine lake trout life history
in Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The fishery appears to be building and
reliable information is needed to manage the fishery properly. The
following actions are recommended;
1. Maintain the present two-fish limit until further information is
available.
2. Expand the netting effort for lake trout to determine fish distri-
bution throughout the year.
3. Continue fall netting to further delineate the magnitude of
spawning, the abundance of spawning sites, and the timing and duration
of spawning activity.
4. Conduct a food habit analysis to determine the amount of compe-
tition between small lake trout and rainbow trout, and to determine
the amount of predation of lake trout on planted rainbow trout finger-
lings.
