and Starostka et al. 1975). Since average size has remained constant,
it appears that the younger fish (age 1+) may be less plump than the
older rainbow.
A summary of harvest information for rainbow trout from Flaming
Gorge Reservoir is presented in Table 6. Catch per hour continued its
decline for rainbow trout, although at a much slower rate than in
recent years. Estimated yield for 1977 could not be figured because
of the lack of fishing pressure data. It is believed, however, that
yield decreased somewhat in 1977 since fishing pressure probably re-
mained constant or decreased.
Stocking of 5-inch rainbow fingerling increased significantly in
1977. It should be interesting to see if this increase, along with
barging of the fingerling, will have a positive effect on the catch
rate and/or harvest.
Discussion
The continued decline of the rainbow trout fishery, which represents
most of the annual harvest, was partially offset by increased success of
the trophy fishery for brown and lake trout. Both species increased
their share of the creel in 1977 as they did in 1976. In addition,
considerable interest was generated in the trophy fishery when a world
record brown trout was caught on March 4, 1977. The fish weighed'
15,252 g (33 lb-10 oz) and measured 1016 mm (40 in)..
Increased interest and angling for trophy brown and lake trout may
be depressing the overall catch-rate, since this type of fishing by its
nature has a low catch-rate. Much of this specialized fishing occurs
during the winter and early spring when overall fishing pressure is
