The collections were made every six
weeks throughout a year. Nine species of cyclopoids, six harpactacoids and one calanoid were found; five species
are new records for Mexico. Jaccard's similarity index revealed the existence of a group of fine eurytopic species.
The linuoocrenes, rivers, streams, marshes and shallow lakes had the greatest diversity of species. Rheocrenes and
ephemeral ponds had low species richness. It is believed that these last habitats have little microhabitat complexity
due to their ephemeral nature or small areas occupied. In the case of the distribution of copepods among
microhabitats it was determined that the greatest numbers of species came from epibenthic areas, aquatic plants and
stromatolites. The scarcity of copepods in open waters of the valley was notable. [Editor's note: English abstract
supplied by authors has been slightly edited by the editor].
The
arachnological fauna of Cuatro Cienegas is poorly known. To add data regarding arachnid distributions collections
were made during 1989 to 1991. Samples included visits to a variety of habitat types based on vegetation. The
orders Scorpionida, Pseudoscorpionida, Solpugida and Aranaea were represented by 19 families. True spiders were
the most diverse group with 24 genera in 14 families. We believe that arachnids play an important role as predators
in maintaining community equilibrium in the valley. [Editor's note: English abstract supplied by authors has been
slightly edited by the editor].
ecosistema.
