f. San Rafael River near Green River Utah - GS number - 09328500.. The
gauge has been in operation from 1909-1918, and from 1946-1995. The gauge is
reflective of the runoff from 1628 square miles above the gauge. The average
annual runoff past the gauge is 104,800 acre-feet.
The records at the gauge are considered good. The natural flow of river is
affected by irrigation for 42,000 acres above the gauge, transbasin diversions for
irrigation in the Sevier River basin, and some storage at Joes Valley Dam (54,610
acre-feet) since 1965.
The annual peak flows vary from a high flow of 12,000 ft3/s on September 2,
1909, to the lowest annual peak of 107 ft3/s on September 16, 1976. The
earliest time that the peak flow has occurred during any water year is March 30th
0979). The latest the peak flow has occurred is September 22nd (1962). In
general, the peak rate of runoff occurs as the result of rainstorms with a large
amount of the peaks occurring in the summer months.
Table 11 summarizes the recorded regulated flows for the San Rafael River near
Green River, Utah, used in the analysis. Table 12 summarizes the results of
entering the yearly peak regulated flows from 1965-1995 into the FREQY
computer model, and letting the model compute natural recurrence level flood
peaks following the log Pearson Type III methodology, and guidelines in Technical
Bulletin 176.
Figure 6 shows the peak regulated frequency curve for the San Rafael River near
Green River.
26
