a
1. Schedule and Study Area
i
A. We recommend a springs summer, and fall survey. An early
spring inventory should be conducted throughout the
present study area (from Farmington to the New Mexico-
Colorado border). On summer and fall trips, ectrofishing
and seining should be used.
B. Data obtained in 1987 indicated that the most likely river
reach in which Colorado squawfish will be found is that
between Shiprock and the New Mexico/Colorado border. For
several reasons (e.g., equipment malfunction and time
constraints), however, the reach from Fruitland to Shiprock
was not adequately sampled. Evaluation of the habitat
between the Hogback (about 8 river miles below Fruitland
and Shiprock, suggests that.this reach is potential Colorado
squawfish habitat. We recommend that the primary effort
during the summer and fall surveys be devoted to the river
between the Hogback and the New Mexico-Colorado border.
2. Methods
A. The designated 5 mile reach sampling approach should be
retained, as well as the first mile of the reach being where
a rather strict sampling protocol is followed. However, in
the remaining 4 miles, the researchers should be permitted
freedom to select areas to sample.

42
