f'
collections were dominated by native flannelmouth and bluehead
suckers.
Notable among other native species collected were Colorado
squawfish and roundtail chub. Two adult and two YOY Colorado
squawfish were taken from the lower 15 river miles of the study
area. One sub-adult and three YOY roundtail chub were also
taken. This verifies that Colorado squawfish and roundtail chub
inhabit and at least periodically reproduce in the New Mexico
portion of the San Juan River. No other rare or endangered
species were taken in the survey, however, their absence in our
collections does not preclude their occurrence in the study area.
We recommend that survey work be continued in the San Juan
River in New Mexico. Additional collecting will generate More -
definitive data on the distribution and biology of the San Juan
River ichthyofauna and provide a larger database upon which
management decisions regarding this fishery are based.
40
