Species Narrative
Colorado Squawfish
The presence of Colorado squawfish in the New Mexico portion
of the San Juan River was confirmed in 1959 when two specimens
were taken near Rosa in Rio Arriba County (Koster 1960). A
specimen at the U.S. National Museum (USNM 132091) was collected
in 1936 by E. Barker, but the locality data is listed as
"Farmington (?)??. We are currently attempting to secure
additional information on the origin of this specimen.
The next verified records of this species in New Mexico were
in 1961 during pre-impoundment studies of Navajo Reservoir-(Olson.
1962). The exact number of individuals encountered during this
survey is unclear but it appears as though at least eight were
captured. Four specimens between 175-200 mm TL were preserved
and deposited in the ichthyological collection at the University
of New Mexico (UNM 767). Four additional specimens obviously
greater than 300 mm TL were photographed and appear on page 27 of
that report (Olson 1962). The disposition of these specimens is
unknown.
In 1965, a Colorado squawfish, caught by hook and line near
Bloomfield, was reported to H.F. Olson (Olson, personal
communication). At that time, this was the most downstream
record of the species in New Mexico, and prior to our 1987 survey
represented the last individual taken from the New Mexico portion
of the San Juan River.
35
