time our efforts. On all three trips, we made an effort to <br />collect all stunned fish throughout the entire five mile <br />designated unit. After collection, specimens were identified, <br />counted, weighed (using Pesola scales), measured (both total <br />length [TL] and standard length [SL]), and returned to the water. <br />Bluehead and flannelmouth suckers and target species were tagged <br />with unique numbered 1/8" x 3/8" green NMFG (New Mexico <br />Department of Game and Fish - tags were incorrectly printed as <br />NMFG as opposed to NMGF) Carlin tags. <br />The fall sampling trip, conducted on 3-12 October 1987, was <br />designed for systematic sampling of post-larval fishes in <br />backwaters. Electrofishing, while not required, was also <br />performed on this trip. According to the study plan only ' <br />r <br />backwaters, defined as "a shallow ephemeral embayment adjacent to <br />the river with no measurable velocity...," were to be sampled. <br />We had no difficulty following the protocol set forth for the two <br />seining runs in each the primary and secondary backwaters. We <br />made several additional seine hauls in these areas in order to <br />ensure accurate assays of species composition and relative <br />abundance in each sampled backwater. <br />Suitable primary and secondary backwaters were not always <br />present in each of the prescribed 5 mile study reaches. There <br />were, however, usually secondary channels with diminished <br />current, isolated pools, and eddies which appeared to be suitable <br />for larval and post-larval fishes. These areas were sampled as <br />time permitted. <br />17
