time our efforts. On all three trips, we made an effort to
collect all stunned fish throughout the entire five mile
designated unit. After collection, specimens were identified,
counted, weighed (using Pesola scales), measured (both total
length [TL] and standard length [SL]), and returned to the water.
Bluehead and flannelmouth suckers and target species were tagged
with unique numbered 1/8" x 3/8" green NMFG (New Mexico
Department of Game and Fish - tags were incorrectly printed as
NMFG as opposed to NMGF) Carlin tags.
The fall sampling trip, conducted on 3-12 October 1987, was
designed for systematic sampling of post-larval fishes in
backwaters. Electrofishing, while not required, was also
performed on this trip. According to the study plan only '
r
backwaters, defined as "a shallow ephemeral embayment adjacent to
the river with no measurable velocity...," were to be sampled.
We had no difficulty following the protocol set forth for the two
seining runs in each the primary and secondary backwaters. We
made several additional seine hauls in these areas in order to
ensure accurate assays of species composition and relative
abundance in each sampled backwater.
Suitable primary and secondary backwaters were not always
present in each of the prescribed 5 mile study reaches. There
were, however, usually secondary channels with diminished
current, isolated pools, and eddies which appeared to be suitable
for larval and post-larval fishes. These areas were sampled as
time permitted.
17
