28
squawfish (67, 72, 106, 106 mm) were captured on July 17-18, 1980,
near Imperial Canyon (river mile 200), and during this time 5 adult
striped bass were captured near Gypsum Canyon (Mike Ottenbacher,
Utah Fishery Biologist, personal communication, 1980). One juvenile
squawfish (251 mm) was gillnetted at Gypsum Canyon on July 22, 1981.
In conclusion, as long as bass congregate for spawning below
Cataract Canyon rapids and threadfin shad are abundant, there is
evidently little cause for concern about striped bass preying heavily
on endemic fishes.
