23
Ichthyoplankton
Four striped bass eggs were collected during 374 min of plankton
net sampling in 1980. One egg was collected in the main channel of the
Colorado River (river mile 198) on June 9 and another on June 17. Two
additional eggs were collected in a single sample in the slow moving
water of Gypsum Canyon on June 16.
The egg collected on June 17 was evidently not fertilized and
floated to the surface of the sample suggesting that it was dead.
The other 3 eggs were alive at time of.capture and appeared to be
in initial stages of cell division. Measurements of the three
presumably fertilized eggs were similar to those of a sample of
fertilized striped bass eggs taken in North Carolina (Mansueti, 1958).
No eggs or larval fish were collected at Spanish Bottom in 1980.
The plankton net collected 12 eggs, 66 larval shiners (Notropis
spp.), and 26 young-of-the-year channel catfish during 324 min of.
sampling during 1981. Three eggs and two larval shiners were captured
at Spanish Bottom; all others were collected at Gypsum Canyon.
Eggs were collected on May 28 and 31, 1981 at Spanish Bottom and
from June 9 - July 2, 1981 at Gypsum Canyon. Larval fish were collected
on May 31 at Spanish Bottom and after June 11 at Gypsum Canyon. No
larval striped bass were captured and all eggs captured during 1981
were evidently Notropis stramineus or Notropis lutrensis.
