13
striped bass spawning from May 5-9, May 20-24, and after June 9, 1980.
Water temperature at Gypsum was within or above the range suitable for
bass spawning throughout the 1981 sampling period.
Catch
Spanish Bottom
During the study, 15 species of fish were collected and identified
at the two study sites (Table 1). Although gillnets were fished from
May 7-21, 1980, and from May 26 - June 2, 1981, near Spanish Bottom, no
striped bass were captured above the Cataract Canyon rapids. Although
water temperature was lower than ideal for striped bass spawning during
the 1980 season, temperature was within the range normally reported for
bass spawning during 1981.
Flannelmouth sucker and carp were the most frequently captured
species in a total of 871 gillnet hours of sampling above the rapids
(Table 2). Brown trout was the second most common species captured in
1981 but was not collected in 1980. Three Colorado squawfish and two
razorback suckers collected in 1980 were captured immediately upstream
from the confluence, on the Green River side where water was 2-3 m deep
in a slower reach. Two Colorado squawfish captured in 1981 were in slow
reaches between Spanish Bottom and the confluence at a depth of 2-3 m.
Relatively low catches in gillnets at Spanish Bottom were attributed
to a lack of suitable netting areas and drift that clogged nets. It is
also likely that the fish population above the rapids was lower than that
found below the rapids in the headwater mixing zone.
