10
Plankton nets (0.5-m diameter mouth, 0.565-mm mesh) were fished
daily in the main channel at bottom, mid- and sub-surface depths for
3-5 min at each depth. Nets became clogged with debris if towed for
a longer period of time. Tows were also made in quiet water and slow
back eddies near Gypsum Canyon. Ichthyoplankton samples were preserved
in 5-8% buffered formalin containing rose bengal dye for later exam-
ination for the presence of fish eggs and larvae. Eggs and larvae found
in the samples were measured with an ocular micrometer.
A 1.3-cm square mesh fyke net with 15.25-m lead was fished from
June 13 - July 12, 1981. The net was set with the lead perpendicular
to shore in shallow (0 to 1.5-m) water and checked approximately every
12 hr.
