8
METHODS
Fish were collected during the period April 26 - June 18, 1980,
and May 24 - July 22, 1981,with 31-m long x 3-m deep, 6.4-cm square-
mesh multifilament nylon gillnets at the head of Lake Powell near
Gypsum Canyon. One end of the net was attached by rope to the shore
and the net was fished in water from 1 - 15 m deep. Nets were
checked every 4-5 hr during 1980. Nets were checked every 0.5 to
3 hr during the day in 1981. Overnight net sets were used only
occasionally during 1981 because of warm water temperature and
possible increased mortality. In addition to the nets fished near
Gypsum Canyon, nets were fished near Spanish Bottom (river mile 213)
above the Cataract Canyon rapids from May 7 - 21, 1980, and from
May 26 June 2, 1981 to determine if bass moved upriver through
the rapids. Catch per gillnet hour was reported in terms of a 31-m
net.
All fish captured were identified, weighed, and measured for
total length. Stomachs of most adult striped bass were collected
and preserved in 10% buffered formalin during 1980. Stomachs were
examined in the field during 1981. Gonads were also examined to
determine their stage of maturity and preserved when maturity was
questionable. In addition, seventy striped bass were marked with
Floy tags and released unharmed during 1981 to assist Utah Division
of Wildlife Resources in studies of bass distribution in the reservoir.
Striped bass were classified into one of the following stages
of maturity, based partly on Scruggs (1957).
