developed ova and extremely dilated blood vessels. Color ranged from pale
green, with some cream colored ova, to a darker green. As the ovaries
approached ripeness ova became clear centered, darker green, and approximately
1-1.5 mm in diameter. The ratio of ovary weight to body weight averaged 1:11.
Scruggs (1957) reported a ratio of 1:10 in South Carolina bass.
Spent. Spent ovaries were flabby, thick walled, and light purple to dark purple
colored. Spent testes were smaller than mature testes, reddish-gray colored,
and relatively dry when cut. Partially spent testes were difficult to determine.
The main blood vessel was frequently loose and milt was less easily extruded
from suspected partially spent testes.
Plankton nets (0.5-m diameter, 0.565-mm mesh) were fished daily in the
main channel at bottom, mid- and sub-surface depths for 2-3 minutes at each
depth. Tows were also made in quiet water and slow back-eddies near Gypsum
Canyon. Ichthyoplankton samples were preserved in 5-8% buffered formalin
containing rose bengal dye for later examination for the presence of fish
eggs and larvae. Eggs were measured with an ocular micrometer.
Discharge was calculated by adding Green River discharge measured at
Green River, Utah (117 mi upstream from confluence) with Colorado River
discharge measured at Cisco, Utah (97 mi upstream from confluence).
Surface water temperatures were recorded daily at 8:00 A.M. and when nets
were lifted.
