The majority of bass captured had empty stomachs (68%) and intestinal <br />tracts (63%) (Table 3). Only 32% of stomachs examined contained food items. <br />Threadfin shad was the item most frequently found in bass stomachs (29%). <br />Red shiners, crayfish, and unidentified fish remains were occasionally found <br />in bass stomachs. Food items were more common in stomachs and intestines of <br />immature, maturing, and spent fish than in mature fish. A greater percentage <br />of females had food items in stomachs than did males although only 42% of <br />females captured were mature whereas approximately 88% of the males were <br />mature. <br />Walleye ranged in size from 384 to 657 mm total length (mean = 538 mm). <br />Walleye stomach contents were similar to those of striped bass; shad was the <br />principal food item consumed. However, a greater percentage of walleye (63%) <br />had food in their stomachs than did bass (32%). <br />Figure 2.
