6
E• The pondweed problem was anticipated from the 1991
HERBICIDE:
experiences. The NFWG decided to use a herbicide. Arizona Game and Fish
(AGFD) coordinated the application of a herbicide permit with the National
Park Service (NPS). The review process took much longer than anticipated
and the application is still pending approval. A decision was then made to
purchase a liner for part of the cove. This was done and the liner is to be
installed in early 1993.
DAVIS COVE:
The year started out with the addition of another backwater to the rearing
effort. Davis Cove, located between Katherine's Landing and Davis Dam was
selected as a grow out area. The backwater is, approximately 3 acres in size
with a minimal operational depth of 12 feet, unlike Yuma Cove's 1 foot. Fish
produced at Yuma Cove and Dexter National Fish Hatchery are stocked into
the cove to grow to 12 inches prior to release into the main reservoir.
NET PLACEMENT: Approximately 25 volunteers from the participating
NFWG agencies installed a barrier net across the mouth of the cove during
February 4-5. The net is-anchored-w- ith concrete, supported with a floatation
boom, and designed to fluctuate with the reservoirs 17 foot operational zone.
Reclamation coordinated the effort and NPS divers installed the anchoring
system. The net is inspected by divers bimonthly to insure its integrity.
FISH REMOVAL: The placement of the barrier net trapped resident fish
inside Davis Cove. Attempts were made to remove non-native fish from Davis
Cove and released them unharmed into the reservoir. Fish were collected
during the week of June 16 using electrofishing, gill netting, fyke netting,
seining, and angling which resulted in the removal of approximately 800
pounds of fish. The size and depth of Davis Cove made it impossible to
remove all the fish and some predation was expected and has occurred.
J
