11
Retrieval of Adult Razorback Suckers
w
Over the course of sampling, a total of 87 adult razorback
suckers (or their parts) were recovered from the, Yuma Cove
backwater (Table 3). Most (83, or 94%) of these were captured
alive and returned to Lake Mohave. Four (5%) natural mortalities
were known (one represented by preservable remains, the other three
in states of decomposition that rendered them useless-tor further
study: one rotting carcass and two caudal peduncles). Also
included in the total recovered were four 'individuals in which PIT
tags could not be detected; these were re-tagged before release
into the lake (Table 3). Thus, 'only 1 adult (1%) among those
stocked into the Yuma Cove backwater remained unaccounted for when
the system was reclaimed in November. Presumably, this fish
perished as a result of natural causes and either sank to the
bottom of the backwater or was removed by scavengers; in either
instance it was unavailable for retrieval.
CONCLUSIONS
The 1992 experience of on-site propagation and rearing of razorback
sucker provided a number of new insights and approaches, and also
indicated certain constraints. Lake Mohave adults stocked into the
backwater were not only recovered and returned to the lake, they
0 also were augmented by a factor of 2.5 (females) to 5 (males) with
