biological study to evaluate the effectiveness of the passage facility was
estimated to cost about $210,000. Therefore, the estimated cost of the
project was estimated at $1,000,000 for design, construction, and biological
evaluation. This project is presently on hold because it is being reevaluated
relative to the biological merit and overall recovery value that will be
gained by restoring the two target fishes to the Gunnison River above the
diversion dam.
Other Instream Barriers
Funding for passage work has been obtained for other potential sites in
the upper basin. Approximately $120,000 is available for determining the
feasibility of passage around or through Taylor Draw Dam on the White River
near Rangely, Colorado, conservation measures incorporated as a part of the
Taylor Draw Reservoir Dam biological opinion. Taylor Draw is a 60-foot high
dam that effectively obstructs upstream movement of fishes. Adult Colorado
squawfish occupy river reaches up- and downstream of the present dam site.
In the present range of these four endangered fishes, there are other
sites in the upper basin where instream barriers may pose potential
obstructions to their upstream movement. Tusher Wash on the Green River
upstream of Green River, Utah and the Grand Valley Diversion on the Colorado
River near Palisade, Colorado are low-head diversion structures that may
obstruct upstream movement during low flows. All life stages of Colorado
squawfish and humpback chub, plus adult razorback sucker occupy river reaches
up- and downstream of Tusher Wash Diversion. Only adult Colorado squawfish
are known to recently occupy the river reach immediately up- and downstream of
the Grand Valley Diversion. The Price Stub Diversion Dam three miles upstream
of the Grand Valley Diversion is a formidable barrier to upstream movement for
fishes at all flows. Adult. Colorado squawfish have been recently {summer of
5
