However, this does not rule out the possibility that fish <br />passageways could be used. <br />2. Fish passage could be considered when it can be demonstrated that <br />it would biologically benefit the population. Those situations <br />are when, <br />1) there is a strong likelihood that squawfish will <br />successfully spawn in a restored reach and contribute <br />significantly to the total reproductive success of the <br />population, i.e., it would result in a net increase in <br />recruitment to the total population, or to <br />2) maintain populations in priority areas presently occupied <br />by squawfish, e.g., river reaches where squawfish now <br />migrate to confirmed or suspected spawning areas. <br />3. Fish passage should not be provided if it is to only add or <br />exchange habitat that is not currently limiting. This would not <br />be considered biologically beneficial to the population. <br />4. Fish passage should not be provided in reaches that may be on the <br />fringe of the squawfish's historic range, particularly if there is <br />no evidence that successful spawning and recruitment would occur <br />there. <br />17
