600 adult razorback sucker from Austin, Colorado, downstream 68 river miles to the <br />confluence with the Colorado River near Grand Junction. <br />Note: goal number two was not achieved because an insufficient number of stocked razorback <br />sucker were recaptured to provide a reliable population estimate. <br />Specific objectives of the study were to: <br />1. Determine the relationship between the size of razorback sucker stocked at 100 mm, <br />200 mm, and 300 nun total length [TL] and their subsequent survival in the wild. <br />(Note: 100-mm fish was defined as the median of 100-mm (e.g., 75-149 nun); 200 <br />mm (e.g., 150-249 mm); and 300 mm (e.g., 250-350 nun). <br />2. Determine the dispersal of stocked fish of various sizes following release over time. <br />3. Determine habitat use of juvenile (100 mm) or sub-adult (200-300 mm) fish in the <br />riverine environment. <br />4. Identify ways to reduce mortality-of stocked fish. <br />5. Evaluate different gear for sampling juvenile and sub-adult razorback sucker that will <br />be needed to develop a monitoring program for this species. <br />6. Recommend the size of razorback sucker the Recovery Program should produce in <br />hatcheries and grow-out ponds to stock for restoring this species in the Upper <br />Colorado and Gunnison rivers. <br />Study Area <br />The study area monitored for stocked razorback sucker included the Upper Colorado <br />River from Rifle (river mile [RM] 240.7) downstream to Beavertail boat landing (RM 195.7), <br />Price-Stubb Dam (RM 187.6) to the Grand Valley Diversion Dam at Palisade, Colorado, (RM <br />185.4), and Corn Lake (RM 177.4) to Westwater Ranger Station, Utah (RM 128). On the <br />Gunnison River, the area included the nearly 57 river miles from Hartland Diversion Dam (RM <br />60) to immediately upstream from the Redlands Diversion Dam (RM 3.9) and the 2.3-mile reach <br />between the Redlands Dam to the confluence with the Colorado River (Figure 2). The physical <br />characteristics of individual river reaches (strata) were previously described for the Upper <br />Colorado River from Rifle to Westwater by Valdez et al. (1982) and Pitlick and Cress (2000), and <br />by Burdick (1995) for the Gunnison River from Delta downstream to the confluence with the <br />Colorado River. <br />7
