1997 following release, but was contacted in mid-July 1998 at RM 95.2. This was
the first and last contact made with this fish. The radiotag certainly had not
failed or expired because it was still operational 397 days following activation.
This suggested that this fish may have been outside the range of river reaches
searched or the radiotag signal was intermittent. Contact was maintained with
seven of these eleven radio-tagged pikeminnow into mid-July and mid-August 1997,
the latest contact being 18 August. Contact duration ranged from 87-426 days.
Seven of these pikeminnow were contacted over 300 days; four over 400 days
(Appendix; Table K.2.). The maximum displacement was again predominantly
downstream (mean of 31.6 miles for 12 fish) compared to the maximum upstream
displacement (mean of 19.5 miles for 12 fish). Final displacement was also
predominantly downstream (mean=14.2 miles) compared to mean upstream final
displacement of 2.8 miles. Three pikeminnow (Codes 80, 84, and 118) were
ultimately found less than 3 miles from their release point. One pikeminnow
(Code 118), was contacted at the same location (mouth of Gardner Pond, RM 174.4)
in the 15-mile reach of the Colorado River where it was released 425 days
earlier.
In 1997 during July, the peak spawning period for Colorado pikeminnow in
the Upper Colorado River, three different radio-tagged pikeminnow were contacted
near the same location in the 18-mile reach of the Colorado River at RM's 156.6-
156.8. However, two of these fish continued to move downstream into Horsethief
Canyon being contacted at various locations later in the month M's 148.5 to
141-3) (Appendix; Table K.6.). Two other fish (Codes 84 and 118) were also
contacted in the 18-mile reach at RM's 168.0-168.5 at the same time. Two fish
(Codes 124 and 126) during the same period in 1998 returned to within 0.5 mile
from where they were contacted during July 1997. Code 124 returned to Horsethief
Canyon M's 141.3 and 141.8) and Code 126 returned to RM 167.8 in the 18-mile
reach.
Following pikeminnow spawning in 1997, four radio-tagged pikeminnow
returned to the Lower Gunnison River. Two pikeminnow (Codes 96 and 126) occupied
a lower section of this reach in mid-July and mid-September. Two other
pikeminnow, (Codes 80 and 89) were located either in or near the Redlands Dam
plunge pool. One pikeminnow (Code 89) was located in the plunge pool of the
Redlands Dam during late-June 1997, and Code 80 was intermittently detected about
0.1 mile downstream from the Redlands Dam plunge pool during late-July and mid-
September 1997.
41
