will be developed for operation of the Aspinall Unit.
Purpose and Objectives
The purposes of this investigation were to 1) evaluate whether sub-adult
and adult Colorado pikeminnow would use the fish passageway at Redlands Dam, and
2) monitor movements and distribution of Colorado pikeminnow that pass through
the fish passageway.
Specific objectives were to:
1. determine the use of passageway by sub-adult and adult native and
nonnative fishes, with particular emphasis on Colorado pikeminnow,
2. determine the movement patterns and distribution of sub-adult and
adult Colorado pikeminnow in the fish passageway, in the Redlands
Diversion Dam plunge pool, in the 2.3-mile reach downstream of the
diversion dam, and those that pass through the passageway and are
released immediately upstream of the dam using radiotelemetry
technology,
3. determine if any of the Colorado pikeminnow that have passed through
the fish passageway are associated with other pikeminnow at spawning
site(s) in the Gunnison River,
4. identify any Colorado pikeminnow congregations that may indicate
spawning in the Gunnison River upstream of the diversion dam,
5. determine the 'threshold' or minimum flow when Colorado pikeminnow
vacate the plunge pool and 2.3-mile reach using radiotelemetry and
direct observation, and
6. determine the utility of using fish passage as a recovery tool for
Colorado pikeminnow at other instream barriers.
One objective, identified in the original 1996 scope of work was discontinued in
FY98:
1. assess physical habitat available [for sub-adult and adult Colorado
pikeminnow] as a function of water depth and discharge.
4
