Fish produced from paired matings would be PIT tagged at the
hatchery at the smallest length possible (about 100 mm) so that
precise pedigree records may be kept of all matings and parent-
offspring relationships.
5. Stock F1 fish, progeny of wild upper Colorado River stock, in
predator-free grow-out ponds; rear to desired size for stocking,
preferably large juvenile (250 to 300 mm total length) or adult-size
fish.
6. Conduct habitat suitability studies. Specific locations for
releasing fish will be determined where suitable habitat exists.
Recommendations provided from habitat suitability studies should aid
in the selection of specific stocking sites. Select stream reaches
proposed for stocking. Selection of stream reaches will be based on
habitat available for razorback sucker necessary for their survival
and eventual successful natural reproduction, past occurrence of
razorback sucker, and density of predatory fishes. General areas
recommended for initial stocking are 1) the Grand Valley area near
Grand Junction, 2) the Rifle to Debeque reach of the Colorado River,
and 3) a 10-mile river reach of the Gunnison River near Delta.
7. Conduct pre-stocking surveys. A pre-stocking survey may be
necessary in stream reaches proposed for stocking where abundance
and general fish survey information is outdated or absent. This
information would be helpful to determine the relative abundance of
native and introduced fishes and to what extent predatory fishes
occur that may effect the success or failure of stocked razorback
sucker in a proposed stream reach.
