Micropterus dolomieui and northern pike Esox lucius, but these were few in number.
Combined, there was a total of about 28,000 non-native fish removed.
Captures of centrarchids, especially largemouth bass and green sunfish, in
backwaters and seasonally-isolated side channels were much higher than previously
reported in seine-survey results. Size-structure analysis revealed that reproduction of
both species occured within these habitats. Barge-electrofishing in shallow, partially-
isolated backwaters proved the most effective means to capture centrarchids. Total cost
for the field effort was $156,000, which translates to a cost of $10.49 for each
centrarchid removed. When all non-native fish are considered, the cost of removal was
about $5.58 per fish. No reach-wide depletive effect on centrarchid populations was
realized using a one-pass, two-gear, electrofishing approach repeated twice annually for
three years. There was no increase in YOY Colorado pikeminnow during the centrarchid
removal period, indicating that, if numbers of young are primarily affected by centrarchid
predation, `control' of centrarchids will require techniques more effective than those
employed here.
v
