r +
a
r
Based on this understanding of the ecological requirements of Colorado squawfish it is the
position of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Services that the prime adult habitat found in the Grand
Valley must be preserved. The adult population of Colorado squawfish above Westwater Canyon
currently consists of only about 250 individuals. An increase in the frequency of strong year
classes will be needed to boost the size of this population. To do so will require spring flow
regimes to more approximate the historical norm, coupled perhaps with a reduction in non-native
competitors and predators and a reduction in waterborne contaminants. In the meantime, all steps
must be taken to maintain and enhance conditions in that portion of the Colorado River that
affords the best habitat for adults, i.e., the Grand Valley, including the 15-mile reach.
11
