Gunnison River catch rates as represented by Stratum 12.-- Catch rates of fish (all sizes) in
Stratum 12 were as high or higher than any of the Colorado River strata. For forage-size fish,
Stratum 12 apparently had the highest catch rate of all strata, although the differences
between Stratum 12 and Colorado River strata 7, 8, 9 and 11 were not statistically significant.
Three other strata exist in the Gunnison River between the Redlands Diversion Dam (rk 3.5)
and the Hartland Diversion Dam at Delta, Colorado (rk 96.4): two downstream and one
upstream of Stratum 12 (see Burdick 1995). In the Burdick study, catch rates of fish (all
sizes) in the Bridgeport-to-Escalante stratum (Stratum 12 of this study) were somewhat
higher than in the two strata immediately downstream, but not as high as in the more upstream
stratum (Escalante to Hartland Diversion), though the sampling design did not allow for
statistical comparisons. For forage-size fish, data from the Burdick study indicated similar
catch rates between all four Gunnison River strata (Figure 4).

5
J
w 4
c
E 3
E 2
1
0
MBH SUCKER ®FM SUCKER ®WS & HYBRIDS ®RT CHUB
BSALMONIDS ®DACE ®CARP
Figure 4. Electrofishing catch rates of primary fish groups from four strata in the Gunnison
River between the Redlands Diversion Dam (near Grand Junction) and Hartland Diversion
Dam (near Delta, Colorado). Catch rates from 1992 and 1993 were averaged. Columns
marked `A' represent fish of all sizes; columns marked `B' represent fish 100-300 mm (total
length). Data are from a previous FWS study (see text) and are provided here courtesy Bob
Burdick. Redl-Whtwt: Redlands Dam to Whitewater, Colorado; Whtwt-Brgpt: Whitewater
to Bridgeport crossing; Brgpt-Esclt: Bridgeport crossing to Escalante Creek; Esclt-Hrtld:
Escalante Creek to Hartland Dam. The stratum designated Brgpt-Esclt is synonymous with
Stratum 12 of this study.
12
Rdl-WhtM WhtM- Brgpt Brgpt-Esclt Esclt-Hrtld
Strata
