ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Numerous discussions with Vince Lamarra and Ron Ryel led to the formulation of this
project; I thank them for sharing their insight and ideas. I also thank Frank Pfeifer for his
efforts in procuring funding for this project and his continued support. Dale Ryden, Toby
Mourning, Bruce Bonar, Mike Montagne, Chuck McAda, Mike Tucker, Marty Miller and
Bob Burdick helped conduct electrofishing surveys. Occasional assistance in the field was
provided by Henry Maddux, Mike Baker and John Pitlick; their contribution is appreciated.
Ron Ryel laid out the electrofishing sampling design and performed statistical analyses.
Others deserving acknowledgment include Mike Farmer and Robert Muth of the Larval Fish
Laboratory who performed diet analyses, Jim Rinne and George.Smith who provided
thermograph data for the Yampa and Gunnison rivers, and Chuck McAda who provided
backwater seine survey and mapping data for the Colorado River. Also, reviews of earlier
versions of this report were provided by David Propst, John Hawkins and Anita Martinez.
This research was funded by the Recovery Implementation Program for Endangered Fish
Species in the Upper Colorado River Basin. The Recovery Program is a joint effort of the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, Western Area Power
Administration, states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, Upper Basin water users,
environmental organizations, and the Colorado River Energy Distributors Association.
viii
Shoreline electrofishing in Stratum 1 of the Colorado River.
