RESULTS
A total of 23,011 fish specimens represented by 15 species
and one hybrid was collected during the four 1988 San Juan River
sampling trips (Table 2). Of these, 5,986 (26%) were collected
on the March, April-May, and October electrofishing trips, 16,927
(73%) during the July-August seining survey, and 98 in March and
April in trammel nets. Three adult Colorado squawfish and one
YOY roundtail chub were captured. No other target species were
taken or observed. Because species composition and abundance
varied according to sampling method, as well as to provide
continuity between the 1987 report and this work, results of
electrofishing, trammel netting, and seining are presented in
separate subsections.
Electrofishina
In the 87 discrete electrofishing samples collected in
1988, a total of 5,986 fish specimens, representing 9 species and
1 hybrid, were captured (Table 3). During the March (Table 4)
and April-May (Table 5) trips, 31 and 33 sites were sampled,
respectively whereas only 23 sites were surveyed in October
(Table 6). There were fewer fall sample sites because we
concentrated our efforts on the river reach between Shiprock and
Four Corners; an elimination of 12 river miles.
9
