4
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Aggradation. - The raising of the surface of streambeds, flood plains, and the
bottoms of other water bodies by the accretion or deposition of material
eroded and transported from other areas.
Bed material. - The sediment mixture of which the bed is composed.
Bed-material load. - That part of the total load of a stream which is composed
of particle sizes present in appreciable quantities in the shifting portion of
the streamed.
Degradation. - The lowering of the surface of streambeds, flood plains, and
the bottoms of other water bodies by the removal of material from the
boundary.
Effective discharge. - The modal sediment-transporting discharge computed from
a sediment rating curve and flow-duration data for a stream for a given time
period.
Quasi-equilibrium. - The condition where sediment supplied to a channel is
transported with the available discharge. No net accumulation or depletion of
sediment in the bed, banks, or flood plain occurs under this condition.
Regime equation. - A mathematical expression relating a channel dimension,
such as width, to a measure of streamflow, such as mean annual discharge.
Additional channel parameters such as bed-material size, channel slope, chan-
nel depth, and bed-material load have also been used in regime equations.
ii
