ABSTRACT
Sediment and discharge records and aerial photography suggest that bed-material sediment
transport and channel width in the Green River have attained quasi-equilibrium after
construction of Flaming Gorge Dam. The river is transporting only the supplied sediment load.
One river segment reached a new equilibrium channel width between 1964 and 1974; another
river segment reached a new equilibrium channel width between 1964 and 1981. High flow in
1983, 1984, and 1986 caused an increase in channel width in both river segments, which reveals
the potential for future channel width responses. Future variations in channel characteristics
should depend only upon changes in discharge and sediment supply and transport in the river
basin.
17.
