period of ten years, at least, would be needed to gather and analyze data.
N.F.R.I. recommends a moratorium of ten years be placed on development in the
study area. A ten year moratorium would be useless without a sound and
adequately financed program to define the basic needs of these fish.
In the meantime, priority should be given to save these fish by any means
available, including artificial propagation and restocking in appropriate areas.
A tagging study was initiated on the Colorado River and its backwaters
by Utah Researchers in 1974 and has continued to the present. Important infor-
mation on movements of these fish has been obtained. These fish withstand
tagging and netting quite well, as some have been recaptured continuously
for a period of years. This study should be continued if continuity is to be
maintained.
In the event the Dominguez Reservoir project is approved and constructed,
a stretch of the Gunnison River will be inumdated or otherwise altered signi-
ficantly both upstream and downstream. In light of recent evidence, this
will have the effect of removing a large section of the Gunnison River per-
manently from potential squawfish and razorback habitat. In light of this,
N.F.R.I. feels a fish hatchery devoted specifically to propagation and main-
tenance of these fish should be an integral part of the reservoir project.
(34)
