Table 7. Mean difference between temperature at the location of captured or
radio-tagged Colorado squawfish and the adjacent main river channel.
Temperatures at locations were first averaged for individual fish; these
means were averaged by month. n = number of fish.
Month
1986 1987
Temp diff Temp diff
(X of X) n (X Of X)
n
JAN - (0) 0.0 (3)
FEB - (0) 1.2 (1)
MAR - (0) 0.7 (3)
APR - (0) 2.9 (3)
MAY 0.4 (6) 2.1 (4)
JUN 4.7 (9) 1.8 (7)
JUL 0.2 (3) 0.2 (7)
AUG 0.7 (3) 0.2 (9)
SEP 0.4 (3) 0.0 (8)
OCT 0.0 (1) 0.0 (7)
NOV - (0) - (0)
DEC 0.0 (3) - (0)
Water clarity in the 15-mile reach may also be a problem for native fishes
because of the introduction of sight-feeding predator fishes to the system.
Clear water during summer may increase the vulnerability of young squawfish
and razorbacks to such predation. Moreover, low flows in summer reduce the
amount of backwater habitat and concentrate young fish, thus making them
even more vulnerable to predation from piscivorous birds and fish.

27
