that were largest when stocked probably grew best because more size classes <br />of fathead minnows (the only forage fish present) would have been available <br />to them. Catch rates continued to decline through the end of the season, <br />indicating that, even during summer and fall, survival rates are probably <br />low. At least two roundtail chub (Gila robust a) were present in the pond; <br />:•• these and the squawfish themselves were apparently the only potential <br />predators present. <br />1987 Plans <br />Growth and survival of pond-stocked squawfish will continue to be monitored <br />through 1987. Additional ponds will be secured as rearing-areas for <br />squawfish fry that we hope to obtain from the White River adults currently <br />held at Hotchkiss NFH. Plans for spawning activities at Hotchkiss NFH include <br />installation of a water heater so that tank water temperatures can be <br />gradually raised to 20 C prior to spawning.- Broodstock from the upper <br />Colorado River may also be captured and transferred to Hotchkiss NFH for <br />future spawning. <br /> <br /> <br />1 <br />29
