effectively. Without combining the two subsamples, mean total length of fish
collected with the large seine was 48.7 mm, whereas mean length of beach-
seined fish was 37.0 mm. Subsequent samples collected with only the large
seine indicated no increase in mean or maximum length.
Young-of-the-year (YOY) carp were too large this late in the season to be
prey for the squawfish, and YOY fathead minnows were scarce. Insect life
that might be used as food by squawfish also appeared to be scarce.
Densities of zooplankton were not determined. Mean condition (K) decreased
during this period (Table 6), suggesting that squawfish were not feeding
adequately. Entering winter in poor condition may affect survival rates of
Colorado squawfish in ponds, and perhaps also in the river.
In West Pond, a large number (perhaps the majority) of the stocked
squawfish schooled in a shallow bay (2-13 cm deep) for the first month
following stocking, then they disappeared, presumably dispersing into deeper
water. This contrasts with the behavior of fish released in Fish Chalet
Pond, where the fish dispersed immediately after stocking. While the school
was in shallow water of West Pond, we used a 3 x 6-mm-mesh beach seine to
collect fish samples. Significant growth had occurred during the first
month following stocking (Table 6). After this, we were unable to collect
" adequate samples of fish because the shoreline precluded effective seining.
However, we were able to collect a few individuals in minnow traps. One was
80 mm long and had grown at least 19 mm since stocking. Although the
inadequate sample sizes prevented meaningful conclusions about the body
condition of these fish, the few individuals that were collected exhibited a
higher K value during October and November than the mean value for fish at
Fish Chalet Pond during this time.
