D. Gila elegans (bonytail chub) <br />1. Original Distribution - Another Colorado River endemic, its <br />original range was probably similar to Colorado squawfish and <br />humpback sucker. Fossil evidence indicates distribution fur- <br />ther south than G. cypha and into smaller, less turbulent <br />streams. In Colorado the original range included the Colo- <br />rado, Dolores, White, Green and Yampa Rivers and their major, <br />warm water tributaries. <br /> <br /> <br />2. General Description - Similar to G. cypha, but dorsal <br />hump not as pronounced in adults. Caudal peduncle pencil- <br />thin and longer than G. cypha; caudal peduncle longer than <br />head in G. ele ans, shorter than head in G. cypha. Dorsal <br />and oval rays 10 (G. robusta has 9). Also see G. cypha for <br />hybridization problem. <br />19
