ANNUAL NARRATIVE REPORT
Dexter National Fish Hatchery
Calendar Year 1983
INTRODUCTION

Dexter National Fish Hatchery is located in the Pecos River Valley of south-
eastern New Mexico. Hatchery construction was initiated in 1931 and fish
rearing began in 1932. Originally constructed to meet demands for warmwater
game fish, new laws and Service policies have brought changes to Dexter. The
current fish culture program consists entirely of holding, spawning, rearing
and distributing imperiled southwestern fishes. Current distribution areas
include portions of the Gila, Salt and Verde Rivers and their tributaries in
Arizona and the mainstream Colorado River near Grand Junction, Colorado.
During 1983 the hatchery staff consisted of seven PFT employees and eight
seasonal/temporary employees as follows:
Hatchery Manager GS-11 Buddy Jensen
Fish Culturist GS-11 Theon Inslee
Assistant Manager GS-9 Troy 1-linham
Fishery Biologist GS-9 Roger Hamman
Fishery Biologist GS-5 Connie Foster
Maintenance Worker WG-8 Joe Owens
Office Assistant GS-5 Sharon Coats
YCC Enrollees Min.Wage Pamela Dees
Roger Durand
Fish Tagners GS-1 Phyllis Inslee
Kevin Kelsey
Betty Coats
Carolyn Knoll
Sharlene Jensen
Rick Dean
Joe Owens transferred from Jones Hole NFH, Vernal, t)tah entering on duty March
21. Specific data on individual species is presented
below. A list of fishes held in 1983 is presented in Table 1.
