or marks, and released. All Colorado pdceminnow over 250 mm captured without PIT tags were
~ PIT-tagged a~ released near location of capture.
Fish Marking
A marking session during 20-24 June and 21-24 July 1998 was conducted in which channel catfish
captured by fyke net in the middle Green River removal reach were fin clipped and released until
~ approximately 300 fish were marked in each section of the removal reach. A different fin clip
combination was used for each 4-mile section. The clips by section were: 1) adipose and right
pelvic fins, 2) adipose and left pelvic fins, 3) adipose only, 4) right pelvic, and 5) left pelvic.
Clipped individuals caught during later trips were noted and removed. Fin clips became
indistinguishable after the 30 August 1998 hip and were not counted after that date.
~ During 1997 in the lower Green River, channel catfish were marked during the first trip by
clipping one of the pectoral fins. Left pectoral fins were clipped at RM's 134.1- 133.25, right
pectoral fins were clipp~l at RM's 138, 137.6, 137.0 and 134.1.
Pnblic Involvement
~ In the middle Green River, a specific Public Involvement Plan was not completed. However,
public concerns were addressed during Flaming Gorge Workgroup meetings. Additionally, two
radio programs were aired in which the public could call in with their concerns (920 KVEL; Kevin
Christopherson, pers. comm.). In the lower Green River, general information on the project was
compiled by Tom Chart ("Green River Catfish Removal Study'. This information was submitted
r to local government agencies, river expedition companies, and other interested entities (Appendix
2). Copies were given to the conservation officer working in the town of Green River area to
distribute to anglers. Additional copies were submitted to "Utah Wildlife News" and all media in
the state. In August 1997 the information was prurted in the Outdoor Notebook section of the
Salt Lake Tribune.
RESULTS
Middle Green River
~ Fyke Netting
1997 Stmamarl- and Relative Abundance of Catch
During the 1997 sampling season, a total of five fyke net removal trips consisting of 5,949.75 net
hours, were conducted from 7 August to 16 October (Table 1). Fyke netting was conducted from
RM 248-228, with a total of 245 nets set throughout the sampling period. Ninety percent of the
~ total catch was comprised of 16,244 chapel catfish which made up 84% of the total biomass at
268.87 kg. Carp and centrarchids (excluding smalhnouth bass) were the next most abundant,
1,093 fish comprised 6% of the catch and 7% of the biomass at 22.7 kg, and 472 fish comprised
2.6% of the catch and 1.5% of the biomass at 4.95 kg, respectively. Smallmouth bass made up
0.25% (45 fish) of the catch and 1 % of the biomass (3.19 kg}. Native fish comprised less than 1
~ (61 fish) of the total fish sampled by fyke nets and 5.3 % of the biomass (17.15 kg). Bluehead
suckers were not present in the catch (Figure 2, Table 2).
/ 7
