Sampling was not only stratified spatially, but also temporally. <br />Seasonal sampling conformed to the river stages of prerunoff, runoff, <br />and post-runoff (Table 1). Days were also stratified into three sampling <br />periods (Figure 4). Daylight activities included setting nets and <br />traps, making physical and chemical measurements, and electrofishing. <br />During darkness nets and traps were tended and electrofishing and some <br />seining were performed. The standardized sampling schedules and proce- <br />dures were strictly adhered to except when weather conditions, manpower <br />shortages and equipment failure dictated minor changes in the schedules <br />and sampling procedures. <br />Sample sites were precisely located on topographic maps. Sketches <br />were made of each 0.5 mi (0.8 km) station (Figure 5) illustrating the <br />prevalence and juxtaposition of habitat categories (Table 2). <br />Three cross-sectional depth profiles were recorded at each 0.5 mi <br />(0.8 km) intensive section using an electronic depth recorder. Depth <br />profiles were recorded at each end of the 0.5 mi (0.8 km) sample sections <br />and at the mid-point of the section. Water quality measurements were <br />taken at each intensive sample site. These included dissolved oxygen <br />(DO), turbidity, air and water temperatures, salinity and conductivity. <br />Such variable parameters as temperature and DO were taken between 1000 <br />and 1400 h. <br />An effort was made to collect fish from every habitat present in a <br />sample station (Table 2). The habitat where each fish was collected was <br />described from a series of depth, velocity, and substrate measurements. <br />Bottom substrates were classified according to the following: <br />Silt fine gritty material <br />Sand less than 3 mm diameter <br />Gravel 3 mm to 76 mm <br />Rubble 76 mm to 305 mm <br />Boulder 305 m m and larger <br />Bedrock rock outcropping <br />The 4.5 mi (7.2 km) reach between stations was sampled in a more <br />general manner, primarily by electrofishing, in order to provide a <br />survey of adult fishes. Physical data were collected only at sites of <br />rare fish captures. <br />Each habitat present in the stations was sampled with every effec- <br />tive gear type. Rare fish captures were located on river maps to the <br />nearest 0.1 mi (0.16 km) and water depth, velocity measurements and the <br />predominent substrate type recorded. All fish collections were accom- <br />panied with detailed information regarding location, date, time of day, <br />measure of effort, habitat type, substrate type and a series of depth <br />and velocity measurements. <br />7.
