• of suspended particles and is a general characteristic of streams and
rivers (Dorris and Copeland 1963).
Stratum A began at Turk's Head, RM 22 (35 kilometers) above the
confluence with the Colorado River and extended to the vicinity of Ruby
Ranch (RM 93, 150 kilometers). This stratum extended through Stillwater
and Labyrinth Canyons. Depths averaged 4 feet during postrunoff stage
and 7 feet during runoff (Table 6). Conductivity ranged from 340 microm-
hos during runoff stage (1980) to 1,050 micromhos during postruno€f
(1980). This area had a sand/silt substrate with a sandy to rocky
shoreline. The stratum was characterized by eddies and side channels.
There are few or no riffles or pools, depending upon river stage, and no
rapids (Figure 10). Canyon walls were typically sloping and of a dark
red color.
Figure 10
0
Log frequency of eight habitats per 10-mile river reach for strata
A though F (river mile 0-315) Green River, Utah, August 1981.
Stratum B began near Ruby Ranch (RM 94, 150 kilometers) and extended
to Gray Canyon at Gunnison Butte (RM 132, 211 kilometers) near the
vicinity of the Green River diversion dam. This stratum had a gravel/
rubble to sand/silt substrate and was dominated by man-influenced drain-
age and runoff from agriculture and the city of Green River, Utah. This
• stratum was strongly influenced by boulders deposited from Gray Canyon.
The average midstation depth was 4.2 feet 0.3 meters) during postrunoff
periods and 6.1 feet 0.8 meters) during runoff. Conductivities ranged
from 470 micromhos (Table 6) during runoff (1980) to 1,600 micromhos
25
