1
' I will develop a subsamPlin9 Procedure that should be used when deemed necessary.
The procedure will allow for counting total number of fishes collected and for measuring
' Colorado squawfish for total length.
- The current level of sampling sympatric species is not adequate to determine their
' influence on the relative abundance of YOY Colorado squawfish. Sampling can not be
expanded with current manpower. Examining the influence of sympatric species on
YOY Colorado squawfish should be eliminated as an objective of the monitoring
' program. This relationship can be examined separately, as part of a research effort, if
deemed necessary.
Adult Colorado squawfish monitoring
- The reaches currently sampled in the monitoring program (20 to 30 percent of the
' known range in the four different rivers) are considered adequate to achieve the
objectives of the monitoring program.
' - Secchi disk and conductivity measurements will be taken for each sample.
- Spheres will be allowed as electrodes on electrofishing boats used for monitoring. They
will be used experimentally this year by everyone. If deemed satisfactory, they will be
the required electrodes in future years.
' - Tagging of endangered fish is not necessary to satisfy the goals of the monitoring
program. Unless tagging is specifically required by the Colorado River Fishes Recovery
Team, it will be dropped from the monitoring program.
Humpback chub monitoring
' - Changes in humpback chub monitoring will not be made until results from the Gila
taxonomy study are available. However, there was general agreement that some
changes may be necessary. These changes include increasing the number of
' measurements taken from the live fish, development of a protocol for use of the pictures
taken of the fish, elimination of tagging as a requirement and expanding the program to
include sampling every two years instead of every three years.
? ?r-ere---
' cc: Members of the Technical Committee
John Hamill, FWS, Denver

41
