Insures the production of the best individuals for a given program. <br />Broodstock -the use of wild or hatchery stock in a propagation program to <br />produce fish for stocking. <br />Critical habitat -specific areas within a species range with physical or biological <br />features essential to conservation of the species or which may require special <br />management considerations or protection (USFWS 1988). <br />Endemic -endemism - refers to a species that occurs in a specific area and <br />nowhere else (Meffe et al. 1997). <br />Fixation - a situation in which one allele at a gene is i:lxed (all others are lost) <br />that may result in a reduction in fitness. <br />Genetic management plan - a plan detailing the genetics of a given species(s) to <br />be used to produce fish for a specific management plan. <br />Genetic refugia -sites where populations of known genetic stocks are <br />maintained in perpetuity. <br />Genetic variability -the variability expressed in the genetic makeup of a given <br />population offish. <br />Habitat renovation -the redevelopment or modification of a habitat to benefit a <br />given species or population of fish or other organisms. <br />Inter-related populations -populations that occur in disjunct habitats but are <br />related genetically. <br />Isolated bays -habitats that are not connected to the mainstem Colorado River <br />or any other tributary -landlocked habitats. <br />Population success -populations that reproduce and recruit on a continuing <br />basis maintaining that population. <br />Reproductive condition -condition describing the sexual development of a given <br />51 <br /> <br />
