y.
INTRODUCTION
The Upper Colorado River Basin Coordinating Committee established an
Interagency Standardized Monitoring Program (ISMP) for the endangered fishes
of the Upper Colorado River Basin. The species of concern to the ISMP are
Colorado squawfish Ptychocheilus lucius and humpback chub Gila cypha. The
ISMP involves the use of standardized data collection techniques to assess the
status and trends in populations of the endangered Colorado River fishes.
Responsibility for development and implementation of the monitoring
program is shared by Fish and Wildlife Service and the states of Colorado and
Utah. The states of Colorado and Utah are responsible for the collection and
computerization of the monitoring data, the Fish and Wildlife Service provides
assistance with field activities and technical support for~data analysis and
report preparation. Funding is provided through the Recovery Implementation
Program for Endangered Fish Species in the Upper Colorado River Basin.
Complete details on agency responsibilities and specific sampling procedures
are available in the draft ISMP Handbook.
Three field programs are provided for in the ISMP: Spring, late-
juvenile/adult Colorado squawfish monitoring; Fall post-larval Colorado
squawfish monitoring; and humpback chub monitoring. This report provides a
summary of activities and results of the fifth year of the monitoring program.
1
