Table 1. Number of fish collections made each year with the various types of
gear, Green River, 1963-1966.
Year
Gear 1963 1964 1965 1966 Total
Shocker 4 69 22 26 121
Seines 0 97 92 75 264
Gill nets 24 47 83 69 223
Fry gear 0
- - - - - 0
- - - - - 32
- --- --- - 27
- - - - - - - 59
- - - -
_., Total 28 213 229 197 667
•
RESULTS
All data collected and utilized in the formulation of conclusions are
presented in the appended theses by W. D. Pearson and C.. D. Vanicek with the
.r .} =-singular exception of the fishes--collected-by D. R. Franklin in 1963. During
the 4-year period, '21 species of fish were-collected, 13 in 1963 and 20 in
1964-1966 (Table 2). The greater number of species taken in the latter '3
years most likely was the result of greater intensity of sampling and greater
familiarity with the river and the use of different sampling methods. The
notable exception to this general pattern was that all three specimens of the
humpback chub-(GilArcypha) taken rr the-study were taken in July, 1963. One
was taken at Echo Park and was identified by Dr. R. R. Miller as "Apparently
representing Gila cypha" (letter to Earl M. Semingsen, October 23, 1963).
The other two were extremely humped forms which closely resemble Gila cypha.
One was taken at Island Park and the other at Swallow Canyon, above Dinosaur
National Monument. Little is presently known of the variability within
-morphological -characteristicsof Gila robusta or Gila cypha, and the identi-
fication of these two specimens remains tentative.
0
