the seining operation. Seine samples with small mesh nets along the edge of
the lake indicated that bass reproduction was stimulated by the removal of
other species but resulted in decreased growth.
It was concluded that the commercial seining program was not effective in
controlling shad and other rough fish in the large eutrophic lake. The
program did indicate that the harvest of fish by large seines had no effect on
the catch of sport fish by anglers. However, the experiment was discontinued
by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission because of adverse public
opinion and pressure from anglers.
Rose and Moen (1953) reported an increase in game fish populations in East
Okoboji Lake, Iowa (1,400 acres, 26 ft. maximum depth) following intensive
removal of rough fish. The seining for rough fish in this program was
confined entirely to open-water periods, principally in the spring and fall
when cool water permitted safe handling of game fishes. Most of the hauls
were made with a 2,500 foot, 2 1/2 inch mesh (bar measure) drag seine. A
small amount of trap netting and a slight amount of gill netting in the winter
was also permitted.
Total weight (thousands of pounds) of rough fish removed by seines, traps, and
gill nets from East Okoboji, 1940-1950.
YEAR
Species 1940 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950
Buffalo 262.0 508.9 734.7 361.2 42.3 101.0 99.2 75.4 24.4 18.4 2.4
Carp 32.7 - 91.8 157.7 77.2 30.2 97.7 33.0 43.2 8.8 82.9 47.4
Sheeps-
head 68.4 45.4 61.2 30.2 5.4 17.9 5.3 19.2 23.4 2.2 9.7
Total 363.1 646.1 953.6 468.6 77.9 216.6 137.5 137.8 56.6 103.5 59.5
Average catch of rough fish and game fish (pounds per seine haul) in East Okoboji
Rough
Fish 7,283 4,785 3,808 3,332 2,860 2,558 4,384 2,448 2,115 3,002 2,02
Game
Fish 111 39 28 54 69 63 185 631 694 234 697
No. of
Hauls 42 106 181 109 20 58 20 48 24 14 26
Average no. of young-of-the-year rough and game fish per seine haul in East Okoboji
Rough
Fish
Game
Fish
No. of
Hauls
391 459 317
89 73 159
18 9 9 9 9 8 9 7 4 4
73 13 23 28 5 311 4
1,646 6,241 6,030 5,645 2,558 25,566 5,92
3
