I
1
1
t
t
1
1
addition, the placement of the PIT tag relative to the internal organs or body
musculature was noted.
Winter Water uali Monitoring; Fertilization
Ice cover usually developed on these ponds during the winter, causing concern that
survival of fish in these ponds might be affected by low oxygen levels during this period.
Dissolved oxygen, ice and snow cover were measured about biweekly during January and
February 1989 in each of the study ponds. Oxygen levels (mg/1) were determined with a
Hach Model OX-2P colorimeter kit. Ice and snow depths were measured to the nearest
1 0.1 cm.

1
1
1
1
1

1

To increase productivity, ponds were fertilized with Triple Super Phosphorus (45%
available phosphoric acid) at a rate of 18.6 kg/ha m.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Field Studies
Roundtail chub
Gardner Pond. Twenty-five fish each were established for the control and test
groups over a one-week period, 15-22 June 1988. Initial survival of these fish was high.
Only one fish from each group died prior to release. However, long-term survival of
roundtail chub in the control and two test groups in this pond was very low. On day 133,
no fish were recaptured (Table 1). On day 343, one control and two fish PIT tagged in
the body cavity were recaptured; on day 351 only one fish PIT tagged in the body cavity
was recaptured; on day 430, three fish were recaptured (one PIT tagged in the dorsal
musculature, two PIT tagged in the body cavity).
12
