After capture, fish were transferred by truck-mounted fish distribution
tank supplied with oxygen from the river to Gardner Pond and 13th-hole Pond at Tiara
Rado Golf Course. To reduce stress during handling and transport, a 0.5% salt solution
was added to the fish distribution tank.
Juvenile-size (225-300 mm TL) Colorado squawfish of hatchery origin were
randomly collected by angling in September 1988 from West Pond. Terminal gear used
for angling consisted of artificial lures (size 8 treble hook) and jigs (size 4 single-shank
hook). Fish were returned to West Pond after tagging.
Juvenile-size (approximately 300 mm to 430 mm TL) razorback sucker of hatchery
origin were collected from Humphrey Pond in 1988 and 1989 by beach seine (76 m long
X 2.4 m deep, 6 mm ace mesh) and multifilament trammel nets (31 and 46 m long X
1.8 m deep, outer bar mesh 25.4 and 30.6 cm, inner bar mesh 2.54 and 3.8 cm). In 1988,
captured razorback sucker were transferred to nearby Gardner Pond. Gardner Pond had
less surface acreage than Humphrey Pond, and we felt that we would be more effective
in recovering razorback sucker from this pond for future observation. Razorback sucker
captured in 1989 were released back to Humphrey Pond after tagging.
One lot of juvenile Colorado squawfish was transported from Utah State
University, Logan, Utah to Hotchkiss NFH. Another lot was obtained from Colorado
State University and held indoors at the field-station facility in Grand Junction. Fish
were transported by fish distribution tank supplied with oxygen and air agitation units.
At Hotchkiss NFH, fish were held in a circular tank (2.4 m diameter and 0.51 m
deep, capacity: 2,275 L). Prior to use, the tanks were disinfected, painted with black
7
